BANGALORE: It's not only land developers who are making a run for the National Government Electric Factory (NGEF) land, but scores of locals too, to cash in on the wasted NGEF property.
Copper wires and other material worth crores stacked up at godowns of the NGEF, a public-sector unit that closed down few years ago, are being plundered by locals who have found an easy way to sneak into the campus.

The security breach came to light recently with the arrest of four youths from nearby Krishnaianapalya which led the police to recover over 300 kg of copper.
The culprits had scaled a compound wall adjoining the military campus near NGEF and stolen the material over a few months.
Each time, the four youth, along with their accomplice, who is still absconding , sneaked into the NGEF campus and stole around 20-30 kg of the material. They buried it or covered the booty with leaves in a nearby playground.
Before daybreak, they shifted the material in an autorickshaw or tempo and sold it to a scrap dealer in Bayappanahalli.
"The gang sold the copper from anywhere between Rs 50 to Rs 150 per kg depending on the need for money. It costs around Rs 200 for a kg of copper wire in the market," a police officer said.

Copper wire and other material are stacked in some godowns in the NGEF campus and the company has deployed security personnel at the campus.
The police have come across several cases where gangs have sneaked into godowns after scaling the compound walls near the military campus or a guest house in the compound.
The police also suspect that the gangs are handin-glove with security guards deployed at the campus. "The thefts do not happen frequently.
Security has been tightened and police patrol the area regularly," a jurisdiction police officer said.
